The Urucum (anatto, achiote, rocou, orlean) originates in the Caribbean. It is also dubbed the lip stick tree and has various traditional uses: sun protection, anti-inflammatory properties, treating of scalds and burns and for cosmetics. The rocou oil is rich in carotenoids, scavengers and tocotrienols which reduce the peroxidation of lipids and counters the harmful effects of free radicals. It protects against oxidative stress and environmental toxins. Further it protects the keratinocytes against UVB induced damage. Aztec women also used the urucum seeds as lipstick. Grinding the seeds releases an intensive red color which can be used to create a fresh complexion.
